The Scottish Grand National Odds are looking competitive ahead of the race with connections all looking for one last big run this season from their horses. Any horse that does well here will often be aimed at the Aintree Grand National the following season, so it is always a key race for punters and experts alike. Paul Nicholls has confirmed that he will run two in the race on Saturday with Neptune Collonges and The Minack to represent the Champion Trainer.

Perhaps the one they all have to beat at Ayr on Saturday is the Cheltenham Festival winner Chicago Grey who has been confirmed for the race by trainer Gordon Elliott. The horse won the National Hunt Chase at the Festival and as the odds suggest he is the class horse of the field, he beat Beshabar that day at Cheltenham and he could also take his chance in the Scottish National. There are 30 Scottish Grand National Runners declared for the big race and we are in for an exciting renewal with a class field set to take their places.

Scottish Grand National

The Scottish Grand National is run over a distance of 4 miles, 110 yards at Ayr racecourse in Scotland; there are 27 tough fences to be negotiated. Ayr is the most prominent of all Scottish racecourses and it also hosts the famous Ayr Gold Cup in September. For Scottish Grand National runners the race is open to 6 year old and above horses. The race typically features several high-profile participants from the Aintree Grand National or more likely future Grand National runners, it can often be used as astepping stone to the big Aintree race the following season.

The Elk was the first Scottish Grand National winner, back in 1867, which indicates that the Scottish Grand National history is a long and illustrious one. The race was originally hosted by Bogside racecourse where it was run over a distance of 3 miles and 7 furlongs, before being moved to Ayr in 1966. The recent Scottish Grand National Roll of Honour highlights the past 15 winners

Although Grand National runners from Aintree regularly travel to the Scottish Grand National, the winner of the Aintree event only rarely claims both races. The last horse to win both titles was Earth Summit, who won the Scottish Grand National in 1994, before claiming the Aintree Grand National in 1998. One famous dual winner was of course the magnificent Red Rum who is one of the all time Scottish Grand National legends. He won in 1974, just a few weeks after winning at Aintree. There are of course specialists in the race, take a look at the Scottish Grand National Top Trainers and also the Scottish Grand national Leading Jockeys pages to glean some idea of who those specialists are.

The age of a racehorse seems to be an important factor in determining its prospects in the Scottish Grand National. Runners aged between 7 and 8 have won seven of the last ten Scottish Grand Nationals. We have put together a number of statistics such as this in our Scottish Grand National Tips page.

Weight can also be a decisive factor on the softer turf found at Ayr Racecourse. Punters may benefit from limiting selections weighted over 10 stone, as only one top-weight runner has won during the last decade. The Scottish Grand National 2008 result will show that the winner can be a rank outsider and be two stone out of the handicap.
