The race was originally hosted by Bogside racecourse where it was run over a distance of 3 miles and 7 furlongs, before being moved to Ayr in 1966. Although Grand National runners from Aintree regularly travel to the Scottish Grand National, the winner of the Aintree event only rarely claims both races. The last horse to win both titles was Earth Summit, who won the Scottish Grand National in 1994, before claiming the Aintree Grand National in 1998. One famous dual winner was of course the magnificent Red Rum who is one of the all time Scottish Grand National legends. He won in 1974, just a few weeks after winning at Aintree. There are of course specialists in the race, take a look at the Scottish Grand National Top Trainers and also the Scottish Grand national Leading Jockeys pages to glean some idea of who those specialists are.

The age of a racehorse seems to be an important factor in determining its prospects in the Scottish Grand National. Runners aged between 7 and 8 have won seven of the last ten Scottish Grand Nationals. We have put together a number of statistics such as this in our Scottish Grand National Tips page.

Weight can also be a decisive factor on the softer turf found at Ayr Racecourse. Punters may benefit from limiting selections weighted over 10 stone, as only one top-weight runner has won during the last decade. The Scottish Grand National 2008 result will show that the winner can be a rank outsider and be two stone out of the handicap.
