Scottish Grand National 2008 Result
Iris De Balme produced an astonishing performance to land the 2008 Scottish Grand National at the Ayr racecourse. He was almost two stone out of the handicap and was not considered any sort of potential winner at 66/1. However he ran superbly and his ability to sprint away at the end showed that he had class. He won by an incredible 14 lengths from the Alan King trained, Halcon Generlardais, ridden by Choc Thornton.
The winning trainer, former jockey, Sean Curran said he was more nervous watching than when he rode in the 2006 Scottish Grand National and he hugely surprised that his horse won.
Alan King also trained the fourth horse home, Old Benny, who went off as the 4/1 favourite with Richard Johnson on board. Johnson must be getting fed up with the race it was the third time on the trot that he had ridden into a place.
